Possum Summer by Jen K. Blom

My friend Jen K. Blom has a middle-grade book, POSSUM SUMMER, coming out on March 14. She answered a few questions for me, and then her character, Princess, asked me some questions and drew me a picture!

PS. I'm having trouble getting Jen's author pic and the full book cover to open. I'm working on it, but this is not the kind of thing I'm best at.

Welcome to the POSSUMS ARE AWESOME blog tour for the middle-grade book, POSSUM SUMMER, coming out in March! (Have you preordered yet?)

Hey everybody! Miss Dorothy is here and we've arrived to hang out with her on her blog! She is so cool. Of course I brought the Brat. :-D

So, a little about the book:

a lonely kid.

an orphaned baby possum.

a dad that says no way.

how do you keep that kind of secret?

and what happens when you’re found out?

Here we go!

DAW: Do you revise a lot? How do you go about it?

JKB: I try to let the first draft go as easy as I can, not too much editing at all as I go along. I'll see things that need to be addressed as I write and then on my consequent passes, I'll hit each point on my list.

DAW: I know you live in Germany. Did that complicate getting a US agent?

JKB: Nope! I'm here to say that it was just as easy - or as difficult - as getting a US agent would be if you lived in the US. Write the best book you can, edit the snot out of it and then edit it some more. Get some betas, edit it some more, check everything a fourth time and then you're good to try. It's what I did!

DAW: How's the broken leg coming along? Care to tell that story again?

JKB: Ugh. You would ask that! Ha! Well, I'm finally home in Berlin and enjoying every second. Leg is ... there. A word to anyone that thinks that as soon as the cast comes off and the screws come out you're good to go. They LIE! They LIES, preshus!

(But in all seriousness, I should be okay. Soon.)

Princess: You're just a whiner.

JKB: Hello, P. Dorothy, I'm sorry.

P: Miss Dorothy, pay no mind to her. She's just bitter and hobbling around like some kind of pirate. What do you like to eat?

DAW: Chicken empanadas followed by bitter chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream.

P: Wow. You know, I never knew there were so many kinds of food in the world. What is that, Australian? And since you're so crazy, what do you do for fun? Bungee jump?

DAW: Read.

P: HA HA HA How did I know? Do you read when you're jumping from a plane?

JKB: P *warning look*

P: Hush up. Miss Dorothy, what's super neat about you?

DAW: Size. I'm super short and super delicate.

P: Holy maccaroni! You are! (JKB showed me the height. You're minute!) That is crazy! Buuu-uut you ended up being the perfect --

P: You're the tiniest person I've ever seen, so of course you're a buffalo! They're big, and bold, and kick everybody's tail! Believe me! I seen one once --

**scuffle**

JKB: Dorothy, I'm sorry. But thanks for having me!

Jen K. Blom writes about animals, the land, and kids, not necessarily in that order. Her debut, POSSUM SUMMER, is available March 2011.

Just the thing to give to a kid to start their summer of reading off right! (Available from your local indie, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, or Book Depository!)

Seen the book trailer yet?

I'm really impressed by the cover art. The girl looks spirited and defiant, and the baby possum is adorable!

The sketch by Princess was cool too. I couldn't tell what it was until she said buffalo, and then I saw it!
